Who this is for: self-serve plans (Free, Starter, Pro, Enterprise). If you bought a Cleanlist AppSumo lifetime deal, Clu is not part of your deal. See the AppSumo documentation. Support agent: confirm whether the user is self-serve or AppSumo before giving plan-specific advice.
TL;DR: Open Clu (formerly Cleanlist Copilot) with ⌘J, then just ask. Clu opens Find People with filters for you, imports CSVs for free, enriches and validates through a Needs your confirmation card, runs skills, and on Pro exports to Google Sheets or Airtable and turns one-off jobs into agents. For the full reference see Clu.
Using Clu
This guide walks through the most common jobs. Most of them work on Starter and up (including the Pro trial). On the Free plan, Clu reads your company profile, runs one sample people search for your workspace and then answers questions; anything more shows a View plans card. The full plan breakdown is on the Clu page.
Before you start:
- Open Clu with ⌘J (Ctrl+J on Windows). The Clu dock opens on the left, beside the page you're on, so Clu can work with that page.
- Or click Search or ask Clu at the top of the sidebar (⌘K), type your request and press Enter.
- Every action that spends credits shows a Needs your confirmation card with the cost. Nothing runs until you click Confirm, and the card expires after 10 minutes.
- On paid plans Clu itself also uses credits (0.2 per message, 0.2 per tool, plus model cost). The coin in the chat header shows what the chat has used so far.
Find people and add them to a list
Describe who you want
Type something like "VPs of Sales at fintech companies in London with 50 to 500 employees". You can also type /prospect and a company name to find decision-makers at one company.
Review the search
Clu turns your words into filters and opens Find People with them. Refine in plain words ("only people in the role for at least a year", "add Germany") and Clu updates the same search instead of starting over. Searching costs no credits but counts toward your plan's search allowance.
Add them to a list
Select people and use Add to list on Find People, or ask Clu to import them ("import the first 50 into a new list called London fintech VPs"). Clu shows an import card: importing is free, up to 2,500 leads per card. Company rows can't be imported, but Clu can find people at those companies.
Asking about one named person ("who is Jane Doe at acme.com?") runs right in the chat instead of opening Find People.
Import a CSV or Excel file
Attach the file
Click the paperclip (Attach a CSV to import leads) in the composer, on Home or in the dock, and pick a .csv, .xlsx or .xls file.
Check the mapping
Clu shows a card: "N rows · M columns auto-mapped. Review and import:". Choose New list (type a name) or Existing list (pick one), and change any column's mapping or set it to skip.
Import
Click Import N leads. The card confirms "Imported N leads into ..." and how many duplicates were skipped. Click View list to open it. Importing is free.
On Pro, Enterprise and the Pro trial you can also paste a Google Sheets link into the chat, or ask Clu to pick a Sheet, and import it the same way (you need your own Google Sheets connection on Integrations).
Enrich a list
Point Clu at the list
Open the list so Clu works beside it, or type @ in the composer and pick the list under Lists.
Ask for what you need
Say "find work emails for everyone without one" or type /enrich. Clu asks whether you want email, phone or both if it isn't clear.
Confirm the card
| Enrichment | Credits |
|---|---|
| 1 per email found | |
| Phone | 10 per phone found |
| Both | Up to 11 per lead |
You're charged only for what is found. Enrichment runs in the background and the list fills in as results arrive.
Validate emails or phone numbers
Paste up to 25 emails or phone numbers, or ask Clu to check the ones on a list. Validation in Clu costs 0.5 credits each and you confirm the total on a card first. To check a whole list, the Email Validation and Phone Validation actions in the Actions drawer do the same job at the same price.
Look up one person or one email
- Find a person's email: "find the work email for Jane Doe at acme.com". The card shows up to 1.5 credits (0.5 for the profile plus 1 for the email), charged only for what's found; 1 credit if you only want the email.
- Who is behind an email: "who owns jane@acme.com?". The card shows up to 2 credits per email, for up to 100 emails.
Results are saved to an automatic list named like Quick Actions: Find Person (Oct 07) or Quick Actions: Reverse Email Lookup (Oct 07).
Run a skill on a list
Open the list and ask
Say "run the Qualification skill on these leads", "research the companies on this list" or type /agents. Clu can run the Research skill, Qualification skill, Custom skill, Employment check and any custom skills your workspace saved, or add a simple text or Yes/No/Unknown column.
Confirm the card
The card shows the total for the rows you picked. Skill prices are estimated per skill and shown before anything runs (for example the Research skill is about 6.3 credits per record for a contact, 12.2 for both, 17.8 for a company). See Skills.
You can run the same skills from the Skills tab of the Actions drawer without Clu. The price is the same either way.
Use @ agents and / skills (Pro)
On Pro, Enterprise and the Pro trial:
- Type @ and pick an agent under Agents to ask about it: "what did @Weekly ICP outbound find last run?", "pause @Inbound routing", "run @Account briefs every Monday at 9". Turning an agent on or off goes through a card. Up to 5 agents per message.
- Type / and pick one of your workspace's skills under Skills to have Clu follow it for that message, for example a "Write in our brand voice" procedure. Up to 3 per message. Skills are created in Agents → Skills.
On Starter, @ lists your lead lists and / shows Clu's four commands (/prospect, /agents, /lists, /enrich).
Export a list to Google Sheets, Google Docs or Airtable (Pro)
Connect your account once
Go to Integrations and click Link on Google Sheets, Google Docs or Airtable in the Workspace section. Each member connects their own account. See Google, Airtable, Notion & Fathom.
Ask Clu
"Export the London fintech VPs list to a new Google Sheet", "write this account brief up as a Google Doc" or "send this list to a new table in my Sales base in Airtable".
Confirm the card
These exports are free. A Google Sheet export holds up to 25,000 rows, with contact columns plus any saved research or qualification results.
Build a one-off play and turn it into an agent (Pro)
On Pro, Enterprise and the Pro trial, Clu can run a multi-step job once and then make it repeat.
Describe the job
"Qualify the leads on my Inbound list and sync the good ones to HubSpot." Clu lays out the steps, checks your connections and sizes the audience for free.
Review and run it once
A Needs your confirmation card shows each step's credits, what will be written (for example "Creates or updates HubSpot contacts"), the most it can spend ("Up to N credits") and your balance. Click Confirm. A One-off run card tracks progress, with Open run and Open list, then Review results when it's done.
Make it repeat
Ask "do this every week". Clu proposes a card like Make Qualify inbound an agent with the schedule and per-run limits. Once you confirm, a card with the new agent's name shows it Off, with Open agent and Turn on. Turning an agent on needs a paid plan (Pro allows 5 active agents; Enterprise is unlimited), so during the Pro trial you can build it but not launch it.
To build an agent from scratch, use Agents → New agent and describe the job to the agent's own Clu. See Build your first agent.
Keep long chats going
- Queue messages. Press Enter while Clu is still answering and your message waits under Queued messages. You can Edit or remove it; when the reply ends, queued messages are sent together. If the reply stopped, failed or ended on a card, click Send now.
- Continue after a limit. One request can make 10 tool calls (25 with a / command, a one-off play or in an agent's workspace) and use 100 credits. When it hits a limit, Clu lists what it finished under Done so far: and offers Continue, which picks up the same plan.
- Watch the context ring. Once a chat is a quarter full, a ring beside Send shows how full it is. On paid plans Clu summarizes older messages for itself so the chat can keep going; your saved chat is never shortened. For an unrelated task, New chat is faster.
- Work in parallel. Each chat runs one reply at a time. Start another chat from New chat in the sidebar while the first one works.
- Find old chats. Click Chat history in the sidebar footer, then search the Chats rail. Pin to sidebar keeps a chat one click away.
Get help from a person
On Starter and up, ask Clu "can I talk to a human?" and it opens live chat with the Cleanlist team. On any plan you can click Help and support at the bottom of the sidebar or email support@cleanlist.ai.
