Who this is for: self-serve plans (Free, Starter, Pro, Enterprise). If you bought a Cleanlist AppSumo lifetime deal, Clu is not part of your deal. See the AppSumo documentation. Support agent: confirm whether the user is self-serve or AppSumo before giving plan-specific advice.
TL;DR: Clu (formerly Cleanlist Copilot) is the AI assistant in Cleanlist. Open it with ⌘J (Ctrl+J), from Search or ask Clu ⌘K, or from Home. It finds people, builds and enriches lists, runs skills and sequences, and on Pro builds agents. Every paid action shows a Needs your confirmation card with the credit cost first. On paid plans Clu itself is charged in credits (0.2 per message, 0.2 per tool, plus model cost, at most 100 credits per request). Free gets a reduced Clu that isn't charged.
Clu
Clu is Cleanlist's AI assistant. It was called Cleanlist Copilot until October 2026. You tell it what you want in plain language and it does the work: finding people, building and enriching lists, running skills, setting up sequences and, on Pro, building and running agents.
Clu always asks before it spends credits on data or changes something important. Those steps appear as a Needs your confirmation card with the cost, and nothing runs until you click Confirm.
Where Clu lives
Clu is one assistant with several places to talk to it. Your chats are shared across all of them.
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
| Home | The composer at the top of Home. Send a message and Home turns into the chat (Back returns to Home, New chat starts over). Quick-start cards below the composer (Find, Enrich, Check, Qualify) fill in a prompt for you. |
| Clu dock | A chat panel that opens on the left, between the sidebar and the page you're on, so Clu can see and work on that page. Drag its edge to resize it. |
Full screen (app.cleanlist.ai/clu) | Clu on its own page, with a Chats rail listing every chat. |
| Inside an agent | Each agent's workspace has its own Clu chat, which builds and runs that agent. See Agents. |
| Slack | On Pro, Enterprise and the Pro trial, DM Clu or mention it in a channel. See Clu in Slack. |
The dock doesn't open on Home, on full-screen Clu or in an agent's workspace, since Clu is already on screen there.
Dock header: the chat title (click it to switch to another chat), the credits this chat has used, your workspace balance, New chat, Expand to full screen and Close ⌘J.
Open Clu
| Way | What happens |
|---|---|
| ⌘J (Ctrl+J on Windows) | Opens or closes the Clu dock. On Home or full-screen Clu it starts a new chat. |
| Search or ask Clu ⌘K (top of the sidebar) | Type a question and pick Ask Clu (or just press Enter) to start a new chat with it. With nothing typed, pick Open Clu. |
| New chat in the sidebar | Opens a fresh chat in the dock beside the page. |
| A chat tab in the sidebar | Reopens that chat beside the page. |
| Chat history (sidebar footer) | Opens full-screen Clu with the Chats rail. |
| Home | Type in the composer and send. |
The /copilot address still works and redirects to /clu.
Chats
- Sidebar tabs. The Chats section of the sidebar lists New chat, the page you're on, and your most recent Clu and agent chats. A chat that is still working is marked as running. Clear hides the tabs without deleting any chat. Right-click a tab (or use its menu) to Rename, Pin or Close it, or drag it up into your pinned items.
- Chats rail. On full-screen Clu, the Chats rail lists every chat with Search chats. Each row's menu has Rename, Pin to sidebar (or Unpin from sidebar) and Delete (you confirm in a Delete chat? dialog). Hide chats and Show chats fold the rail.
- Several chats at once. Each chat runs one reply at a time. While Clu works in one chat you can start or continue another.
- On each answer: Copy, Regenerate, Good response and Bad response.
The composer
The message box reads "Ask Clu to help (type / for skills, @ for agents and lists)".
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| @ menu, "Agents and lists" | Agents lists your workspace's agents, newest first; picking one adds it to your message so Clu can read it, change it, schedule it or turn it on or off (up to 5 per message). Lists lists your lead lists with their lead counts; picking one points Clu at that list. On Starter, @ lists your lead lists only. |
| / menu, "Skills and commands" | Skills lists your workspace's own procedure skills from Agents → Skills; a picked skill guides Clu for that one message (up to 3 per message). Commands lists Clu's four built-in commands (below). On Starter, / shows the commands only. |
| Paperclip, "Attach a CSV to import leads" | Attach a .csv, .xlsx or .xls file. Clu auto-maps the columns, you choose New list or Existing list, review the mapping and click Import N leads. Importing is free. |
| Queue and Stop | Press Enter while Clu is answering and your message waits under Queued messages, where you can Edit or remove it. When the reply ends, queued messages go out together as one message. If the reply was stopped, failed or ended on a confirmation card, the queue waits for Send now. |
| Context ring | A small ring beside Send appears once the chat is a quarter full. Hover it to see Context, how full the chat is, and what is using the space. |
Built-in commands (type them at the start of a message):
| Command | Name | What it does |
|---|---|---|
/prospect | Prospect a Company | Find decision-makers at a company, import and enrich them |
/agents | Run Agents and Smart Columns | Run skills (Research, Qualification, your custom skills) and data-cleanup columns on the current list |
/lists | Manage Lists | Create, organize, filter or clean up lead lists |
/enrich | Enrich Leads | Enrich leads with email, phone or both |
A command also lets that one request make up to 25 tool calls instead of 10.
Long chats. On paid plans, when a chat gets long Clu summarizes the older part for itself so it can keep going. Your saved chat is never shortened. On the Free plan, Clu reads only the last 10 messages of a chat.
What Clu can do
Plans are explained in Plans and who gets what. "Starter and up" includes the Pro trial.
| Area | What you can ask | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Find people and companies | Describe who you want ("VPs of Sales at fintech companies in London"). Clu turns it into filters and opens Find People with them, so you can review and refine. Asking about one named person ("who is Jane Doe at acme.com") or searching with CRM exclusions runs right in the chat. Searching costs no credits but counts toward your plan's search allowance. | Starter and up (Free: one sample search) |
| Web research | Search the web for news, events and facts, read a result or a link you paste, and find a person on the open web. | Starter and up |
| Lead lists | Read your lists and leads, create and rename lists, copy leads, filter the open list (name, company, title, email, phone, location, headcount, status) and open any page in the app. | Starter and up |
| Import, enrich, validate | Import people from search results or a CSV, enrich emails and phones, validate emails and phone numbers, find one person's email, and look up who is behind an email. Each runs through a confirmation card. Company rows can't be imported, but Clu can find people at those companies. | Starter and up |
| Skills and columns | Add a text or Yes/No/Unknown column, fill in values, and run the Research skill, Qualification skill, Custom skill or Employment check on a list. See Skills. | Starter and up |
| Credits | Check your balance and estimate what something will cost. | Starter and up |
| Company profile | Read your saved company profile and ideal customer profile. | Every plan |
| Sequences | List and read sequences; create, edit, pause, resume and activate them, and enroll people from a list (up to 2,500 at a time), each through a card. Activating or enrolling sends real email. See Sequences. | Starter and up (during the Pro trial you can build but not launch) |
| One-off plays and agents | Describe a job, let Clu size the audience for free, preview it and run it once ("Up to N credits" card). Ask Clu to repeat it and it turns it into a scheduled agent. You can also run an agent now and read run results. @ an agent to read, update, schedule or turn it on or off. | Pro, Enterprise, Pro trial (launching needs a paid plan) |
| CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce) | Check which people are already in your CRM, read accounts and records, and read your CRM sync settings. Read only: Clu doesn't write to your CRM from chat. | Pro and up, with a connected CRM |
| Knowledge | Search your workspace's Knowledge (files, web pages, Google Docs, Notion pages, Fathom meetings) and cite what it used as numbered footnotes. | Pro, Enterprise, Pro trial |
| Google Sheets, Google Docs, Airtable | Export a list to a new Google Sheet (up to 25,000 rows), create a Google Doc, import a Google Sheet (picker or pasted link), and export a list to a new Airtable table. Uses your own connection from Integrations. See Google, Airtable, Notion & Fathom. | Pro, Enterprise, Pro trial |
| Memory | Save notes Clu reads in every chat, and search your own past Clu chats. | Starter and up |
| Help | Ask for a person and Clu opens live chat with the Cleanlist team. | Starter and up (on Free, use Help and support in the sidebar) |
Run results in a regular chat: Clu reads the results of a one-off run, the latest run in that chat, each agent's last run, and an @-mentioned agent's last run. Browsing all of an agent's runs and paging through their records happens in that agent's own chat.
Only in an agent's workspace: building or changing an agent and its play, CRM duplicate cleanup and merges, CRM field mappings (admins), creating per-record skills, reading Notion databases, outside sequencers (lemlist, Outreach, Salesloft) and webhooks.
If your plan doesn't include something (for example Sequences or Agents), Clu tells you Cleanlist has it and points you to Settings → Plans & billing instead of offering to set it up.
Confirmation cards
Before Clu spends credits on data, deletes something, sends something or changes an agent, it shows a card titled Needs your confirmation with:
- What it is about to do
- The credit cost (coin icon and number)
- A countdown: the card expires after 10 minutes
- Cancel and Confirm (Confirm is red for deletes)
What happens next:
- Confirm: the action runs once. The card shows Action completed and the credits used. Confirming twice never charges twice.
- Cancel: nothing runs. Clu notes that the action didn't run and carries on; you can type why you cancelled and Clu adjusts.
- No answer for 10 minutes: the card shows Action expired ("This action expired. Please ask again.").
- Not enough credits: instead of a card, Clu shows an Insufficient credits message with what the action needs and what you have.
Standard cards show the cost but not your balance; your balance is in the dock header and in the sidebar credits row. Cards for one-off plays and Run now also list each step's credits, what will be written, the most the run can spend and your balance.
| Action on the card | Credits |
|---|---|
| Import leads to a list (search results or a CSV) | Free, up to 2,500 leads per card |
| Enrich | 1 per email found, 10 per phone found, up to 11 per lead for both. Nothing for misses. |
| Validate emails or phone numbers | 0.5 each, up to 25 per request |
| Find a person's email | Up to 1.5 (0.5 for the profile plus 1 for the email), charged only for what's found. 1 if you only want the email. |
| Reverse email lookup (who is behind an email) | Up to 2 per email, up to 100 emails |
| Run a skill or add a smart column | That skill's or column's per-record price, shown on the card. See Skills. |
| One-off play or Run now on an agent | "Up to N credits", or "Uses no credits." |
| Delete a list, delete leads, move leads | Free (the card is still required) |
| Save, change or forget a memory note; create or change a sequence; export to Google Sheets, Google Docs or Airtable; turn an agent on or off | Free |
Results of find a person and reverse email lookup are saved to an automatic list named like Quick Actions: Find Person (Oct 07) or Quick Actions: Reverse Email Lookup (Oct 07), so you never lose them.
What Clu costs
Free plan: Clu is not charged.
Starter, Pro, Enterprise and the Pro trial: Clu is charged in credits for each request (one message you send and everything Clu does to answer it):
- 0.2 credits for the message you send
- 0.2 credits for each tool Clu completes successfully. Checking your balance, estimating a cost, filtering a list, opening a page, listing agents and memory are free.
- The AI model cost of the request, converted at $0.012 per credit and rounded up to the next 0.1 credit. Web searches Clu runs are part of this cost (about 0.83 credits per search, plus reading the results).
Paid actions are separate. Enrichment, validation, skills and other actions cost their normal price, shown on the confirmation card. They are never charged twice.
Ceilings:
- One request in the web app uses at most 100 credits (40 in Slack).
- To start a request, your workspace needs at least 40 credits available (your balance minus what other running Clu requests have set aside). Clu sets that amount aside while it works and you pay only for what the request uses. Otherwise Clu replies that you're out of credits and need to top up.
- Your workspace's AI model spend for Clu is capped at $37.50 per day (about 3,125 credits), web app and Slack combined. The day resets at midnight UTC.
Where you see it: the coin in the chat header shows Credits used in this conversation, including paid actions. In Slack, a charged answer ends with "Used N credits". Add credits in Settings → Plans & billing (top-ups aren't available during the Pro trial). See Credits & Pricing.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Messages | 30 per minute per user |
| Tool calls per request | 10 in a regular chat; 25 with a / command, a one-off play, or in an agent's workspace |
| Credits per request | 100 in the web app, 40 in Slack |
| Credits needed to start a request | 40 available (paid plans and the Pro trial) |
| Workspace AI spend for Clu | $37.50 per day (UTC), web app and Slack combined |
| Confirmation cards | Expire after 10 minutes |
| Replies running at once | One per chat |
| @ agents per message | 5 |
| / skills per message | 3 |
| Import from chat | 2,500 leads per card |
| Validation in chat | 25 emails or phone numbers per request |
| Reverse email lookup in chat | 100 emails per card |
| Chat titles | 255 characters |
When a request reaches a limit, Clu stops with a short Done so far: summary and a Continue button that picks up the same plan. The stop message says which limit was hit: "Clu stopped at this request's credit limit.", "Clu stopped at this request's AI cost limit." or "Clu stopped at the most tool calls one request can make."
Plans and who gets what
| Plan | Clu in the web app | Charged |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Reduced. Clu reads your company profile and runs one sample people search for your workspace. After that it answers questions and shows an Unlock AI search, enrichment, smart columns, and more card with View plans for anything else. | No |
| Starter | Full chat: search, lists, import, enrich, validate, skills, sequences, web research and memory. No agent building, no @ agents and no workspace skills in the / menu. | Yes |
| Pro, Enterprise | Everything above plus building and running agents, @ agents, workspace skills, Knowledge, CRM reads, Google Sheets, Google Docs and Airtable, and Clu in Slack. | Yes |
| Pro trial | Same as Pro. Agents and sequences can be built but go live only on a paid plan. | Yes, from trial credits |
| AppSumo only | Not available. Full-screen Clu shows "Clu isn't available on your AppSumo plan." Subscribing to a paid Cleanlist plan unlocks it. | n/a |
On an older plan, Clu works as on the matching plan above; building agents needs a switch to current pricing unless it was already enabled for you. See Legacy plans.
Memory
- Clu saves personal notes by default. It saves a company note (visible to everyone in your workspace) only when you ask it to share. Any member can approve a company note.
- Saving, changing or forgetting a note goes through a free confirmation card.
- Notes are up to 800 characters, with up to 32 personal and 32 company notes. Clu reads about 4,000 characters of notes with each request.
- Clu can also search your own past Clu chats ("what did we decide about the EMEA list last week?").
Your first chat: workspace setup
When you sign up and fill in "Let's find your next customers." (your name, job function and company website), Clu sets up your workspace in your first chat without asking questions. It reads your website, searches the web for your company, sizes your market and saves your company profile. You then see:
- A Company profile card with your ideal customer profile (with match counts and Open in Search) and buyer personas
- Four suggested ways to start
- A row to book a setup call
The setup chat is free and creates no agents. Only the member who signed up sees it. Edit the profile any time in Agents → Profile.
What Clu won't do
- Send email outside a sequence you confirm on a card
- Book meetings
- Write to your CRM from chat (it reads only)
- Create downloadable files (Google Docs and Google Sheets through a card are the exception)
- Search these docs. Clu answers product questions from what it already knows and points you to docs.cleanlist.ai when unsure. On Pro it searches your workspace's own Knowledge.
Need a person? Ask Clu for a human and it opens live chat with the Cleanlist team ("Let me connect you with our team."). You can also click Help and support at the bottom of the sidebar or email support@cleanlist.ai.
